After School Clubs
We have a rock climbing wall at our Plainfield location and the wall is available to any of our YBEC programs. In 2013, we started up our Rock Climbing Club. This extra curricular club takes place after school hours on Fridays. Students have the opportunity to advance their skills in rock climbing and perform physical fitness training to progress in the sport. We also take our climbing club students to outdoor climbing areas and indoor competitions throughout the year.
Tae Kwon Do
Our Character Fitness training program is a unique approach to physical education by incorporating martial arts discipline that stresses the development of individual character, integrity, and respect for self and others while providing participants with confidence and self-discipline. Character Fitness training also promotes a building positive character traits associated with success including Patience: helping them to better understand themselves and allowing them to become freer people who can keep patience and use good judgment in all affairs; Courage: strengthening the will and fortifying the person against obstacles, weakness, and the disappointments of life; and HEALTH: improving a person’s overall physical and mental well-being.
All students participate in martial arts at YBEC and are instructed by certified black belt instructors who are employed full-time as support staff or academic teachers. YBEC students are provided the opportunity to advance through the “belt system.” After three years the students should be eligible for the rank of deputy black belt, which is the pre-black belt level. The student then has two marking periods before being considered for his Black Belt. In the history there have been only six students to reach the level of Black Belt. Students who desire more training are welcome to participate in the YBEC Taekwondo club. Students in this club participate in off-campus tournaments with YBEC. Club members are provided the opportunity to compete at local, state and regional level competitions. In the past we have also supported several students to go to the US Nationals. YBEC proudly has three students that have won national championships for YBEC.
YBEC’s skateboarding club is another way that we reward students that are doing well in school. We have built small ramps with our students to use on campus and we run trips to area skateboarding park such as the Underground, Grind Lab, Reid Menzer Skatepark, and more. We enjoy teaching first time skateboarders and we are able to assist in teaching students advanced skills in skateboarding. We have even built our own skateboards decks in Art Class.
